Julian Meeting Contemplative Prayer Group

Who we are

Julian Meetings foster the practice of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition and are named after Julian of Norwich, a fourteenth-century mystic.

In contemplative prayer, we seek to be aware of the presence of God and to remain silently and attentively in that presence. Our group meets regularly to share silence together. For those who are drawn to contemplative prayer, meeting with others in this way can be a great help and encouragement.

What we do

We meet monthly either on zoom or in one of our homes, depending on circumstances at the time, Meetings begin with a short reading, chosen and read by one of the members. This may be a piece of spiritual or inspirational writing, scripture, or a poem.

This is followed by music which leads into the time of stillness. The group shares thirty minutes of silence together, and another piece of music leads out of the quiet time. Finally, there is some social time with tea and a chat.

Time and place

The third Thursday of each month. 7.45pm – 9.00pm

“The opening reading and the music/song sets the tone and sitting quietly for 30 minutes gets easier each time. Scripture tells us that hearing from the Lord is often just a gentle whisper and we need to listen patiently.”

“There is something very profound and special about sitting in silence, with others, in the presence of God.”
